Virtual World Modeled on Shakespeare's Works on Hold
The development of Arden, a multiplayer online world modeled on the settings and characters in Shakespeare’s plays, has hit a snag, according to an online message posted today by Edward Castronova, a telecommunications professor at Indiana University who spearheaded the virtual environment.
Over the summer Mr. Castronova had appealed to the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation to provide millions of dollars to support continued development of Arden. But the foundation, which provided $240,000 for the initial construction of the project, has not been able to make a commitment.
“We have come to the end of our funding,” Mr. Castronova wrote, “and while we are still working, I’m not sure when we will have anything worth reporting.”—Andrea L. Foster
