Today’s students have no time to go to college first before finding new friends. They are much too busy for that. So many of them use their online skills to find out who else will be new on campus and get to know them computer-interface to computer-interface before shaking their hands.

The New York Times reports how Facebook and other social-networking sites allow new students to break into the college community more comfortably than moving to campus without knowing anybody. For some, it has made what can be a nerve-racking experience a little bit easier. —Dan Carnevale
