Virtual Auction Will Raise Money for Virginia Tech
Ross A. Perkins, an instructional technologist at Virginia Tech, has set up a silent auction in the virtual world Second Life to raise money for the Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund. The fund was established by the university to raise money for victims' families and people on campus who are struggling to cope with last month's deadly shooting rampage. Among the 30 virtual items available for bidding are artwork, furniture, and educational tools, including a filing cabinet, an electronic pointer, and lights. Bidding started May 7 and will close May 13.
Mr. Perkins says his goal is to raise more than $1,000 for the fund. (Second Life money, called Linden dollars, can be exchanged for U.S. dollars.) So far, he has amassed roughly $950 through donation boxes scattered around Second Life. Mr. Perkins also helped build a memorial in the virtual world to honor the victims of the attack. He runs an academic library and a newspaper for educators in Second Life. --Andrea L. Foster
