University Transforms Its Web Site Into a Somber Memorial

In the aftermath of Monday’s shootings, Virginia Tech transformed its Web site from a standard online portal into a somber memorial to the deceased.

The site, now swathed in black, opens with a message of sympathy from Charles W. Steger, the university’s president. It promises that a second site, created “for the public to leave thoughts and condolences in the wake of Monday’s tragedy,” will be unveiled late Tuesday.

In the meantime, Virginia Tech officials have posted online a video recording of a convocation ceremony held Tuesday. They have also created a series of podcasts from a Tuesday news conference featuring, among others, Mr. Stenger; Wendell Flinchum, the chief of the Virginia Tech Police Department; and Marcella Fierro, the Virginia state medical examiner.

On the Web site, Virginia Tech has also announced the creation of the Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund, which will raise money to aid with grief counseling, memorial costs, and communication expenses for the families of the victims. —Brock Read
