U. of Oklahoma to Be Wind-Powered by 2013

You must be in a red state when you give patriotism and environmentalism equal billing while announcing a green initiative.

“It is our patriotic duty as Americans to help our country achieve energy independence and to be sound stewards of the environment,” David Boren, president of the the University of Oklahoma, said on Wednesday, announcing a plan to power the campus entirely by wind by 2013.

According to the Associated Press, the university will set up a deal with Oklahoma Gas and Electric Co., which will build a big wind farm in northwestern Oklahoma. The wind farm still has to be approved by the Oklahoma Corporation Commission, and transmission lines will be needed as well.

Renewable power seems to have a bright future in Oklahoma. The AP story notes that the University of Central Oklahoma already gets all of its power from wind. And Oklahoma State University is home to the International Ground-Source Heat Pump Association, the leading trade group of the geothermal-energy industry.
