U. of Iowa Struggles to Repair Power Plant Before Winter

When the storm-swollen Iowa River overflowed its banks and spread across the University of Iowa’s campus this summer, it did more than just damage 20 buildings. It also severed the university’s utility network and shut down the power plant, which provides steam for heat, air conditioning, and other uses.

The university is making steam in temporary boilers for the time being, but officials said during a news conference on Wednesday that the power plant will have to be back online by the time cold weather sets in or the university won’t be able to heat all its buildings. The Chronicle‘s Eric Kelderman and Katherine Mangan report.
