Tick, Tock ...
Time may be running out for Ward Churchill — the ethnic-studies professor at the University of Colorado at Boulder who compared the September 11 victims to Nazis, calling them “little Eichmanns,” and who was accused of plagiarism and academic misconduct — or maybe not.
[Last week] a faculty committee investigating allegations of research misconduct against the tenured ethnic studies professor sent their findings to CU President Hank Brown, who will review the confidential report and make a recommendation on Churchill’s fate within the next 15 business days.
Although the findings of the report are secret, some people are predicting that the faculty’s vote remains divided between recommending a reprimand or dismissal, according to Colorado Daily staff writer Paula Pant, who explains what may happen next:
If Brown recommends Churchill’s dismissal and the faculty report agrees, the case will go to the CU Board of Regents. If Brown advocates dismissal but the faculty report disagrees, the faculty must reconsider.
If Brown recommends suspension without pay or no punishment at all, the case is closed.
Churchill’s attorney, David Lane, said if Churchill is dismissed he will sue CU on the premise the university is retaliating against Churchill’s exercise of the First Amendment.
