Before looking back at the week’s post, happy birthday wishes to George, who after all is the proximate cause of this site’s existence! (NB: I was going to use this cake photo, but it’s not CC licensed! Flickr users, set your photos free!) May your next year be full of joy.
The week that was on ProfHacker:
- Natalie encouraged us to keep a little perspective at the beginning of the semester. Julie offered a 15-minute trick to gain 24 hours of lower stress. Speaking of stress, Nels had strategies for managing the tenure process’s emotional swings. Guest author Lincoln Mullen explained how to keep up with journals and academic databases.
- Ethan suggested ways to lecturecast more effectively. Billie discussed how to make your pedagogy more self-aware and, separately, the thorny issue of classroom humor. Amy explained how she talks to her students about Wikipedia. I’m perennially confused by add/drop, but brand-new ProfHacker Erin Templeton is a master of classroom silence.
- The Birthday Boy asked what might be done for Haiti. Closer to home, the AAUP has a new journal devoted to academic freedom.
- In standing posts, Billie offered sausage & rice for lunch, while I linked to a couple of interesting interviews on productivity and intelligence, and in Open Thread Wednesday Brian was wrong about the iPad.

LIES! Although to be fair, I did later offer up on Twitter some links to pieces by others on the possible benefits and problems of the iPad.

I'm just saying that starting from the premise that "it's a big iPod Touch/iPhone" leads down the wrong path.
