The Liar, the Witch, and the KKK's Ridiculous Wardrobe

As we go into the weekend before Thanksgiving, you might take a few moments to give thanks that you're not having to deal with the problems currently vexing some of your fellow universities:

1. Jeff Schemmel resigned this week from his post as athletic director at San Diego State University after he admitted misusing state funds for a tryst in Alabama.

2. The University of Nebraska at Lincoln agreed to pay $40,000 to an unnamed woman who says she was fired from her job directing a youth program there after an associate dean learned that she was a witch.

3. The Mississippi White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan plan to rally this weekend at the University of Mississippi to protest a recent decision by Chancellor Dan Jones to remove "From Dixie With Love" as the school fight song. Despite the chancellor's request, Ole Miss students had persisted in chanting "The South Will Rise Again!" at the end of the song. Shane Tate, the Mississippi klub's "great titan," offers this reassurance: "We aren't coming there to cause problems or cause trouble."

Happy Friday, everyone. —Don Troop

Let's not shame C.S.Lewis by this drivel.

Generally, the behavior a child is distinctly different from that of adults because most people mature physically, mentally, and socially. For instance, as we mature, more suitable coping skills than shedding tears or having a temper tantrum in public when we don't get what we want or things don't go our way are used. When will this childish "the south will rise again" and kkk krap go away? Most of us have, at least, began to grow up and get over it. What's wrong with those children? Why won't they grow up too? I thought universities were, among other things, suppose to be gatherings of people exploring NEW ideas. Attention students of the "university" of Mississippi: "The south will rise again" and the kkk are old ideas that have been thrown out because they are completely obsolete and of no good social value. It's time to let it go. That is all.

Okay, am I really that stupid? (Note - rhetorical question).

Schemmel claimed "improper expenses of $460". Because of this improper behaviour and because he resigned he receives a payout of $116,000 and forgiveness of a $20,000 payment for his home loan from the university.

Can I come (no pun intended) work at SDSU? If only for a weekend?
I know of at least one job opening currently available.

mdmartinma - I think you should probably read up a little more on the issues than what is presented in this little blurb before drawing the conclusion that all Ole Miss students support the chant, that the chant has anything to do with the KKK, or that Ole Miss is, as you put it - a "university", as if it is anything but. The emotions on both side of that issue run too deep for your generalizations.

Do all Ole Miss students support the chant? Clearly, many do not. Does it have anything to do with the KKK? Well a small number of hooded protesters did rally in support of the song. Is Ole Miss a univeristy? Certainly. Is there any excuse for strong emotions on the side of shouting "The South will rise again"? Only insensate drunkenness.

$116,000 for a tryst! Wow! How much for an affair?
