The Latest in the Ward Churchill Saga ...
The University of Colorado Board of Regents has scheduled a closed hearing July 24 to finally determine whether or not the university will dismiss Ward Churchill — the controversial ethnic-studies professor who called victims of September 11 “little Eichmanns” and who was later found guilty of research misconduct by a university investigative panel, an article in the Colorado Daily reports:
According to Michele McKinney, university system spokeswoman, the hearing was requested by Churchill and will take place in executive session, as outlined by the university’s dismissal-for-cause policy, which states that all hearings must take place in executive session.
The upcoming hearing will take place in three phases, beginning with a briefing for the regents by council. The second part will be the hearing itself, and will involve attorneys for CU, Churchill, and the Privilege and Tenure Committee.
“Each will have a set amount of time to make their presentations to the regents,” said McKinney. “The regents may ask questions, but new evidence will not be presented.”
Once the hearing has concluded, the regents will deliberate in executive session, added McKinney. After the deliberation, the board will move into a public session, where it will take a public vote.
“The regents’ vote will address President Brown’s recommendations to dismiss Churchill,” said McKinney. “They can either agree with his recommendation, or the regents can opt against dismissal, and choose a lesser sanction, or return Churchill to the classroom without penalty.”
The vote will put an end to the two and a half year case that started following allegations that Churchill was involved in academic and research misconduct after the interim chancellor at the time reviewed his scholarly works.
Churchill has said he will sue the university if the administration fires him.
