The Fundamentals of Facebook
In the latest installation of its “Seven Things You Should Know About…” series, Educause takes on Facebook, the social-networking site beloved by thousands upon thousands of college students.
The higher-education technology group offers a thumbnail sketch of how the site works and what it means for faculty members and administrators. But the most interesting piece of the report may be its thoughts on how Facebook could affect pedagogy: Like many emerging Internet applications, Facebook also emphasizes the importance of creating content over simply consuming it…. Any technology that is able to captivate so many students for so much time not only carries implications for how those students view the world but also offers an opportunity for educators to understand the elements of social networking that students find so compelling and to incorporate those elements into teaching and learning.
