Terrorist Ties to a Campus Speech? U. of California at Irvine Asks U.S. to Investigate
The University of California at Irvine is investigating whether a student-sponsored speech last May was improperly used as a fund-raising event, and it has forwarded to the U.S. Justice Department a more-serious allegation that money was raised for a terrorist organization at the event, The Orange County Register reported. The Muslim Student Union, which sponsored the speech -- by a British politician who founded an organization to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza -- contends that the Zionist Organization of America filed the complaint as part of a larger effort to intimidate Muslims at Irvine. Federal officials have investigated complaints involving the two groups before, and in 2007 cleared the university of allegations that it had failed to respond promptly and effectively to complaints that Jewish students were harassed.
