Teenagers Broadcast Advice on Getting Into College
"We need help finding the right outfit and accessories for our future," the teenagers say while shopping-mall noise hums behind their voices. "Oh, I got just what you need," an adult answers.
They're talking about getting into college, not into a new outfit. The conversation is actually a radio public-service announcement, which just won a contest sponsored by the American Council of Education, the Lumina Foundation for Education, the Ad Council, and the YMCA.
The spot was produced by Aamina Muhammad, 14, and Shakira Onwuachi, 16, from the North Community YMCA, in Minneapolis. In the ad, they say they want a small school that is "highly ranked" and diverse.
The nameless adult gives some unsurprising advice: Stay focused in high school, take standardized tests and challenging classes. And make sure to visit KnowHow2GO, an ACE-supported program that outlines steps for everyone from middle schoolers to high-school seniors that will help get them into college.
The third-place winners, from the Wilmington (N.C.) Family YMCA, offer the most unorthodox advice: "Just be a pain," a young boy says. Tell parents, teachers, and counselors you want to go to college, and don't stop until you get them to help you. --Josh Fischman
