Tech Grants Are Begging for Applicants

While university researchers are scrambling to find grants, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security can't seem to give its money away.

The department has nearly $2 million dollars to pay for research into security and video quality. For some previous funding opportunities, there were relatively few qualified applicants, and the department hopes to do better this time around.

The money is supposed to go for research into wireless "interoperability": systems that support the ability of emergency response officials to move voice and video data around on demand and to do it in real time, according to the Touchstone Consulting Group, which is helping to administer the grant application process. The deadline for applications is June 25. -- Josh Fischman
