Support for PC's and Psyches
The stereotypical Big Man on Campus, probably, is a jock or a college-council president. But for the first few months of every academic year, the most beloved students may be those who work for their colleges’ computer-repair services.
After all, people manning the helpdesks and hotlines are the ones students call during real emergencies — like when the Web stops working during a late-night cram session. The San Jose Mercury News points out that colleges are staffing their computer-support centers not just with tech wizards, but with students possessed of that ineffable quality known as “people skills.”
“Trained in both technology and psychology, they live in the dormitories and are on call, day and night,” writes the newspaper. “They’re part geek, part crisis counselor — and extremely popular.” —Brock Read
