Start the Presses: Cheers to Gene Weingarten!

I have to do this one fast because I’ve got to teach in a few minutes but I had to say this right away: One of my coauthors just won a Pulitzer Prize!

A couple of weeks ago I told him that I probably had as much chance of being named Miss New York State as his winning this. Hahahaha.

I guess, um, today’s news makes me, um, wrong because I don’t see any banners or bathing suits near me right now.

Yeah, other people know him as Gene Weingarten, not as my coauthor for I’m With Stupid: One Man. One Woman. 10,000 Years of Misunderstanding Between the Sexes Cleared Right Up, but forgive me if I can’t help but think of him as the guy who called me up a few years ago and, out of nowhere over the phone, asked me to defend the idea that women are funny.

Here is the article that earned him the top prize in journalism; it appeared in The Washington Post almost exactly a year ago.

You know how, on occasion, when somebody you know wins a massive award you feel a little weird, have a little wince around the heart ? That’s not the case with Weingarten. He’s smart, he’s the funniest man in the world, and he deserves this award with bells on. Okay, so he whines, he made me watch Jackass: the Movie, and he once appeared in front of 700 people at an event held by the Smithsonian holding a mop with balloons to represent me, but he’s still one of the smartest guys I know. He’s basically a kid from the Bronx who knows how to make us see the world in a new way, which is what the best humor writers — hell, what the best writers — have always done.

Applause, Weingarten. No kidding.
