Silicon Valley Sweetens the Pot
The decline in the number of American computer-science majors might be bad news for Silicon Valley, but it seems to be working out nicely for students still pursuing degrees in the field. As the ranks of qualified students dwindle, companies like Google and Microsoft are plying undergraduate interns and prospective employees with ever-sweeter perks.
Google fetes its interns with ice-cream socials, bowling nights, cruises, gourmet meals, and a scavenger hunt in San Francisco, reports CNET News. Microsoft holds a dodgeball tournament, passes out tickets to San Francisco Giants games, and invites out-of-state interns to a barbecue at Bill Gates's house. Pretty heady stuff for programmers in their teens and early 20s. --Brock Read
