Shop Talk: a Hurricane-Proof Hospital, Building in Binghamton, and More
Built to last: A new building at the Medical University of South Carolina campus in Charleston is the first health-care facility in the United States built to meet new hurricane and seismic codes, according to a short item in ArchitectureWeek. The 641,000-square-foot facility, intended for treating cardiovascular and digestive diseases, cost $275-million and was designed by NBBJ.
Taking a bite: The University of Iowa will renovate its 200,000-square-foot College of Dentistry building, which was constructed in 1973. The plan is to increase classroom and student spaces, and upgrade research facilities.
New rooms: The State University of New York at Binghamton is starting construction on a $300-million project to replace dormitories on the east side of its campus. The project is expected to be done in 2013.
Encore: In Milledgeville, Ga., the Georgia College & State University has finalized its purchase of a nearby Art Deco campus theater to renovate it into a performance hall and bookstore. The exterior of the building, which has been closed since the early 1980s, will be restored. The project is expected to cost about $7-million.
