Nanoscale naming opportunity at Harvard: A new $155-million Laboratory for Integrated Science and Engineering opened earlier this month as part of Harvard University’s North Yard science complex, according to The Harvard Crimson. The 135,000-square-foot building, much of which is underground, was designed by the Spanish architect Rafael Moneo, who teaches in Harvard’s architecture department. It is intended to encourage collaboration among researchers from different labs, and at the same time to preserve the lawn of the music building — the lawn now sits atop the new structure’s 10,000-square-foot clean room for fabricating nanoscale devices. The Crimson notes that the university has not yet found a lead donor for the building.

Leadership opportunity in Georgia: The University of Georgia’s president, Michael Adams, said Thursday that the institution should become a national leader in conservation of water, energy, and other resources, according to the Athens Banner-Herald. The president’s comments come as much of the southeast endures an extended drought. The university has issued tips for water conservation as well as a task-force report, “Every Drop Counts,” that makes for particularly interesting reading. Among other things, the report notes that automatic flushing devices have been removed from some campus toilets because the devices were flushing too frequently.

Opportunity for angles and planes: Colorado College is building an arts center by one of angularity’s modern masters, Antoine Predock. The 72,400-square-foot building, which will house teaching and performing facilities, is expected to cost $33.4-million and to open next June.
