Cop shop: Wayne State University has renovated a 1924 building by Albert Kahn to serve as the headquarters for the university police department. The project included restoration of the central staircase, a large skylight above the staircase, the building’s wood and marble, the terrazzo flooring, and the ornamental plaster column capitals and cornices. One of the challenges in the restoration, a university release noted, was in adding modern amenities (particularly security features) while retaining the historic aesthetic. The renovation had added Internet cables, police-dog facilities, holding cells, a gymnasium, and a secure evidence and weapons room.

Big projects in a big state: The University of Texas-Permian Basin has announced plans for a 100,000-square-foot, 10-story performing arts center projected to cost $74-million, according to the Midland Reporter-Telegram. The university also just broke ground on a 70,000-square-foot science and technology complex, projected to cost $54-million and to open by 2010.

On top: Tony Badger, the master of Clare College at Cambridge University, placed a solar panel at the top of a residence building as part of a “top-out” ceremony. The building will incorporate a number of green technologies, including geothermal wells to heat and cool the building. The structure will also be tightly insulated.
