Dairy Preservation: Berry College’s WinShape Retreat has won a preservation award from the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The multistructure complex, built as a dairy by the college’s students in the 1930s, is now operated as a “media free” retreat for groups and individuals. The renovation was overseen by Surber, Barber, Choate and Hertlein, Architects.
Real-Estate Projects: The Lincoln Institute of Land Policy has published a working paper about real-estate projects undertaken by urban colleges and universities outside of, or on the periphery of, their traditional campus boundaries. The researchers who prepared the paper found that 225 of 604 institutions they contacted are expanding beyond their traditional campus boundaries.
A Safe House for Data . . . : Indiana University breaks ground today on a new $32.7-million Data Center on its Bloomington campus. The building is designed to survive tornadoes and earthquakes, as well as to provide an advanced level of security, according to the Indiana Daily Student. Designed by SmithGroup, the data center (right) is scheduled to open in 2008. (SmithGroup image)
. . . and a Hall for Honors Students: Next Wednesday, Indiana will hold a cornerstone ceremony for a new 15,000-square-foot honors-college building that will be located adjacent to the Indiana Memorial Union. The $3.6-million building, designed by WDI Architecture Inc. in association with BSA LifeStructures, will have a “great hall” for events, as well as offices, classrooms, and study lounges. The cornerstone — which will actually be part of a column by the entrance — will include a time capsule.
