Shop Talk: Clean Energy, a 'Place to Dream,' and 'High-Toned Bums'

From plumbing to pupils: The University of Louisville is considering renovating a manufacturing facility and transforming it into student housing. Preservationists had protested the planned demolition of an American Standard plant, where the company had produced plumbing fittings until 1992, according to The Courier-Journal. The 200,000-square-foot structure, built in 1923, could accommodate 150 rooms. The university has hired the firm Joseph & Joseph to plan the renovation.

Clean energy on the bay: St. Mary’s College of Maryland announced on Campus Sustainability Day that it would cover 100 percent of its power with the purchase of renewable energy credits and that money for the purchase would come from students. Renewable energy credits get mixed reviews; a story in a recent issue of BusinessWeek, blogged here, was particularly critical. However, St. Mary’s College has shown more and more concern about sustainability and climate change recently — in part because the college, which sits on the Chesapeake Bay, may be under water if seas rise considerably.

‘A place to dream’: The University of Arizona is putting finishing touches on a new building for its College of Architecture and Landscape Architecture. The building has a number of green features, including a green wall that will be planted with yellow orchids, and a cistern to collect rainwater. The building will also feature the “Archon Room,” a fourth-floor room with panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. The lead donor, Richard Williams, “thought people in this building needed a place to dream, a place to think about big-picture ideas and about the design profession and how we are benefiting the community,” said R. Brooks Jeffery, associate dean of the college.

What’s in a name?: A lot, apparently. Oklahoma State University held a forum about whether to rename two buildings on campus, Murray Hall and North Murray Hall. William H. “Alfalfa Bill” Murray, a former Oklahoma governor, left behind racist writings and wasn’t particularly fond of higher education; according to the OSU student paper, he said college turned people into “high toned bums.”
