Shop Talk: Campus Life on the Mississippi, Ground Zero Demolition, and More
River Views in Missouri: Southeast Missouri State University has set October 21 as the formal opening of its $51-million River Campus, set on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi. The complex, intended for visual- and performing-arts programs, includes both former seminary buildings — constructed between 1843 and 1871 and mentioned in Mark Twain’s Life on the Mississippi — and 100,000 square feet of new construction. Among the facilities are a museum, a 950-seat performance hall, a 205-seat recital hall, a 200-seat theater, and a dance studio.
Renovations in Massachusetts: Springfield College has renovated and renamed two academic buildings, according to the Reminder, a newspaper in central Massachusetts. Schoo Hall has been renovated and expanded according to the guidelines of the National Science Foundation’s Project Kaleidoscope, and will now be known as the Schoo-Bemis Science Center. It houses the college’s science programs — biology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, and physics. And the building that used to be known as Bemis Hall is now Hickory Hall, housing technology-enhanced classrooms. The science-center project cost $6-million, while the classroom building’s renovations cost $1.5-million.
Demolition Near Ground Zero: A 15-story Borough of Manhattan Community College classroom complex damaged in the 2001 collapse of the two World Trade Center towers is slated for demolition, according to the New York Post. The complex, part of the City University of New York, will be replaced by a $202-million classroom-and-laboratory facility designed by Pei Cobb Freed & Partners.
