Shop Talk: Big Money in Binghamton, New Life for a Federal Building, and More

Big money: The State University of New York has more than $9-billion for campus upgrades and renovations, according to the Binghamton Press & Sun Bulletin. About $3.75-billion will go to “critical maintenance,” and $1.28-billion will go to the state’s 30 community colleges. The Binghamton campus is asking for $435-million for its share. Almost $542-million will go to projects in biofuels and renewable energy, like wind turbines.

Business benefits from government surplus: Indiana State University’s College of Business will occupy a historic federal building by 2009, according to the Terre Haute Tribune-Star. The building, which was constructed in 1934, does not meet security standards for government buildings after the September 11 attacks. The courts and agencies housed in the building will move to a new structure downtown, and a renovation of the building is under way. Indiana State is considering how it might connect the building to a nearby university technology center; a bridge and an underground tunnel are being considered. The renovation will cost $23-million, with $6-million covered by the government.

Too much science?: The Daily Orange, the student newspaper at Syracuse University, reports that the institution is getting a new Biomaterials Institute to add to a new $107-million life-sciences complex opening on campus. Some students told the newspaper that the university is spending too much on the sciences.
