Shop Talk: A Winner in Michigan, Preservation in North Carolina, and More

Finally, a winner: At an event scheduled for January 15, Michigan State University will announce the winner of a competition to design its new Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum, according to a university news release. City Pulse, an alternative newspaper in Lansing, had reported that the announcement had been delayed because the cost of constructing the winning design was estimated to be significantly higher than the $30-million the university has budgeted.

Under construction: Shaw University is putting up a three-story health-research building in downtown Raleigh, N.C., according to The Raleigh Chronicle. The building was designed by William Ferm Architects.

On the boards: Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science plans to start construction in April on a 63,000-square-foot research and nursing-education building in south Los Angeles, according to the university’s Web site. The building, paid for with a $43-million bond issue, is due to open in August 2009. It was designed by the Los Angeles office of HOK.

Central High School Central Piedmont Community College has restored the facade of the old Central High School building.

Preservation prize: In Charlotte, N.C., Central Piedmont Community College’s renovation of the former Central High School’s facade has won a preservation award from Historic Charlotte, an advocacy organization. The building, used by the college for decades, was stripped of a Modernist red-brick exterior. A stucco facade with brick and stone accents was then constructed, recreating the look of the original. The project architect was Little.
