Sex Education Arrives in Second Life

The University of Plymouth, in Britain, has established a region in the virtual world Second Life to educate students about contraception and sexual health. The site’s digital characters, called avatars, can even grab free condoms from a dispensing machine. Susan Toth-Cohen, who helps direct an occupational-therapy program at Thomas Jefferson University, in Philadelphia, was in on the site’s creation.

The region offers Web links—including a blog about the project—to other sex-education materials. An office in the sky allows for one-to-one sex counseling. —Andrea L. Foster
