Scrubbing Away Social Security Data
A high-profile hacking incident at Boston College that left the personal information of about 120,000 alumni temporarily exposed has prompted campus officials to start deleting unneeded Social Security numbers from their servers. A number of colleges, citing identity-theft concerns, have long since stopped using the numbers to identify students. But many of the institutions have been slow to scrub unnecessary Social Security information from their networks: The Massachusetts Institute of Technology, for example, stopped using Social Security numbers more than two decades ago, but only started removing old data last year.
