SCUP Announces Its Architecture and Planning Awards
Portland, Ore. — The Society for College and University Planning announced a series of awards at the annual conference here. Among the most anticipated of these awards are the various honors for new architecture, renovations, master planning, and landscape architecture.
In a session here, some of the jurors commented on trends they had seen among the entries. Campus plans had included more alternative modes of transportation and more stormwater-management programs than in previous years. Mixed-use development was a strong trend among campus designs. And among architecture, Modernism seems to be dominant.
The jurors noted disappointment in the entries in a couple of areas: Although the plans for individual buildings were often impressive, too few connected their designs to broader campus plans and contexts. Mark Maves, an architect with Ayers/Saint/Gross who led the jury, said the jurors had also hoped to see more international projects among the entries.
Without further ado, here are the winners of the 2009 SCUP Excellence in Planning, SCUP Excellence in Landscape Architecture and SCUP/AIA-CAE Excellence in Architecture awards. —Scott Carlson
