'Rogue' Hot Spots Stoke Network-Security Concerns
College officials debating whether they can afford to expand campus wireless networks should consider this: If they don’t put access points in labs and classrooms, professors may take matters into their own hands. And that’s not such a great idea, as administrators at the University of Iowa can attest.
The university’s wireless network covers only 15 percent of the campus, so impatient faculty and staff set up about 80 “rogue” hot spots—wireless access points that are often left unencrypted. The access points set up by the university, on the other hand, require users to enter identification numbers and passwords to log onto the campus network, according to The Des Moines Register. —Brock Read
