Research Libraries Embrace Publishing

Research libraries are “rapidly developing publishing services,” according to a report released in March by the Association of Research Libraries.

The report states that by late 2007, 43 percent of 80 research libraries surveyed were publishing some kind of content—usually journals—and another 21 percent were planning to get into publishing. Only 36 percent of respondents said they were not active in publishing. Scholars and researchers’ desire to have their work featured online, not just in print, is one factor pushing libraries into publishing, the report states. —Andrea L. Foster
