RIAA Sets Its Sights -- and Suits -- on LimeWire

The recording industry filed suit Friday against LimeWire, a company whose peer-to-peer software has become one of the most popular tools left available to music and movie downloaders.

As record companies pushed file-sharing services like KaZaA, Grokster, and Morpheus out of business, LimeWire stepped into the breach, claiming to be “the fastest file-sharing program on the planet.” The Recording Industry Association of America soon took notice, and for more than a year the trade group has sued individual song swappers who use the software.

In its suit against LimeWire, the recording industry is seeking $150,000 in compensation for every song distributed without permission, according to CNET News. —Brock Read
