Pump Up the Volume
Senators introduced a bill yesterday to halt a fee hike that radio stations at educational institutions would have to pay to play music online. It is similar to legislation introduced in the House of Representatives last month to cap a rise in fees for Webcasters.
The Senate version goes further than the House’s in helping college and high-school Webcasters by keeping their fees at current levels instead of more than doubling them, as was decided by the Copyright Royalty Board, a three-judge panel that settles disputes between the recording industry and providers.
The bills are strongly opposed by the recording industry. In fact, the recording industry is also trying to get legislation passed that would require radio stations to pay more fees to play music through traditional broadcasts, according to BetaNews. —Dan Carnevale
