Professors at Russian University Must Get Approval to Publish or Present Overseas
Faculty members at Russia's St. Petersburg State University must submit their scholarly work to administrators for approval to publish it abroad or present it at foreign conferences, according to a new order this month described in today's New York Times. Administrators defend the new policy, which covers humanities professors and scientists alike, as protecting Russia's intellectual property and national security, just as any other country would do. But some professors assailed the policy as heralding a new wave of academic censorship akin to Soviet-era restrictions, and said they expected certain outspoken colleagues might be the targets of the new rules.
