Permissions Granted
Microsoft’s online book search engine will include scanned copies of copyrighted material. And that will actually be legal.
The company was able to secure permissions from publishers to scan “tens of thousands” of copyrighted books into its search engine, according to Computerworld. The online copies will be available starting Thursday. They will be in addition to the public-domain works already available.
Microsoft appears to be avoiding the legal complications that Google got itself into when it scanned thousands of copyrighted books for its online search engine without publishers’ permissions. Although Google says that what it has done is legal, publishers have sued the company, alleging copyright infringements. —Dan Carnevale
