Ohio U. Welcomes a New IT Chief

Officials at Ohio University announced yesterday that Shawn Ostermann, an expert in computer networking and data security, will become the institution’s interim chief information officer. Mr. Ostermann had been the chair of the university’s School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.

Mr. Ostermann will walk into a difficult job. Ohio is still reeling from the hacking incidents that felled William Sams, its previous IT head (The Chronicle, July 11), and the university has promised to restructure its computing offices and to revamp its data-security procedures.

Mr. Sams, who still serves as one of the university’s associate provosts, will stay on hand to help with the transition. But Mr. Ostermann will soon be turning over the reins himself: He says he has no intention of applying for a permanent CIO post. —Brock Read
