As could be predicted, listservs are abuzz with legal questions about what colleges are legally and ethically required to do in response to DMCA takedown notices and prelitigation settlement letters sent to campuses.

Many are responding to the Chronicle’s inside look yesterday at how the RIAA uses a file-sharing program to catch student file-sharers. With more information the RIAA’s end of the process, college administrators are now arguing about what their duties should be in regards to preventing and responding to music piracy on their own campuses.
