New Flu Cases Hit Nearly Three-Quarters of Campuses, Survey Finds

The number of suspected swine-flu cases continues to surge at colleges nationwide. An additional 4,045 cases of “influenza-like illness” were reported for the week ending September 4, with cases documented at 73 percent of the colleges responding to a weekly survey by the American College Health Association. Preliminary data show that 149 of 204 colleges, accounting for 2.4 million students, reported new cases during the second week of reporting. Rates of the disease were highest in the Southeast and Midwest. The survey, which tallied seven hospitalizations and no deaths, does not include data from several states. (Last week's data are here.)

Update (9/10, 11:35 a.m.): The association has issued revised data that incorporate additional responses, with 236 colleges and universities reporting 4,974 cases, eight hospitalizations, and no deaths. Seventy-two percent of the colleges reported cases, compared with 54 percent the previous week.

I thought you'd want this information, which might well have some relevance, given the hundreds of medical students who come to CHLA in any given year.
