Naval War College Pulls Its Web Site After Hacking

For a few years, American intelligence experts say, Chinese hackers have been coordinating attacks on computer systems run by U.S. defense and military offices. The hackers, whose identities and motives are unknown, have managed to inflitrate some major networks -- including ones run by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the Sandia National Laboratories.

And now, according to The Washington Times, they've made life more difficult for professors at the Naval War College, in Newport, R.I.

The college -- which trains senior officers and tests strategic innovations -- is renowned for its experiments in war games and cyberwarfare. But its Web site has been taken down, and its e-mail system shut off, after security officials noticed what they termed as "network intrusions" this month.

Experts who spoke with the Times seemed to disagree about the extent of the hacking incident. But a college official referred to the attack as "an isolated incident" and stressed that wings of the U.S. Department of Defense were not affected. --Brock Read
