Miss Congeniality of Internet Privacy
What’s better than teaching incoming freshmen about Internet safety and privacy by bringing in a celebrity to talk about it? Bringing in a celebrity who has been burned by public exposure of “racy” online photos.
Miss New Jersey, Amy Polumbo, spoke to freshmen at Wagner College about the dangers of putting too much personal information on the Internet. Many students tend to post private information and pictures on their MySpace and Facebook pages, then express shock when somebody finds them online.
Ms. Polumbo shared her own life lesson. Pictures of her partying and striking odd poses went from her Facebook page to the front page, almost resulting in her losing the Miss New Jersey crown.
The Gothamist reports that Ms. Polumbo told students not to put anything online they wouldn’t want a prospective employer to see. “Your years of college will fly by quickly,” she said, “but the Internet is forever.” —Dan Carnevale
