Michigan State U. Puts a New Face on Personal Statements

Students applying to Michigan State University now have the option to send a videotaped personal statement to the university’s admissions office.

According to Michigan State’s student newspaper, The State News, the university now lets prospective students finish their applications by creating personal videos in addition to their written statements. Applicants can upload their videos to public Web sites like YouTube and then send the clips to CollegeSupplement, a site that forwards videos to university admissions offices.

Jim Cotter, the director of admissions at Michigan State, told MarketWatch that the video application will level the playing field for international students and students who can’t afford to visit the campus in person.

Still, the university won’t have a grasp on how many students choose the video option until more applications come in, Mr. Cotter said. “It will be interesting to see how much it catches on this year, but I would anticipate in years to come this will be one of those things that the momentum will grow,” he told the campus newspaper. “My sense is this is likely a new technology that down the road will be widely used, but we jumped in on the front end.” —David DeBolt

Editor’s Note: This item originally stated that video essays could be submitted instead of written statements, but Michigan State officials say that students who send in videos must still submit written statements.
