Messages May Say Too Much
Sure, some college students post too much personal information on Web sites like MySpace and Facebook. But social networks are not the only places where people forsake their own privacy: The Instant Messenger "away message," after all, is still going strong.
Many students leave themselves logged on to instant-messaging programs even when they are in class or asleep, and they can leave short messages readable to anyone who tries contacting them when they are not at their computers. Away messages seem innocuous enough, and in most cases are harmless, but some students do type in their cellphone numbers or leave updates on their personal lives, as the Albany Times Union points out. --Brock Read
