Earning LEED certification for a building isn’t easy, says Ron McCoy of Arizona State University, which recently earned platinum certification for Building B of its Biodesign Institute, and gold certification for the institute’s Building A.
Mr. McCoy, who is university architect at Arizona State, tells the online ASU Web Devil that all new buildings on the campus are expected to achieve at least a silver LEED rating — as did the university’s Interdisciplinary Science and Technology Building II. But he says the requirements for LEED certification are stringent, covering not just energy efficiency but also indoor air quality, management of construction materials, and overall sustainability.
Pursuing sustainability so diligently may cost more, Mr. McCoy says, but universities “have the ability to provide some leadership in these kinds of things.”
