McCain's Misogyny

Gina Barreca and Michael Nelson on Brainstorm have already weighed in on John McCain’s choice of Sarah Palin to be his running mate. This is an election year, and the stakes too important, for any of us to stay out of the fray.

John McCain, looking around at all the possible VP candidates, decided that Sarah Palin was the best possible candidate. Is it that she’s the best qualified because she’s a former beauty queen, sports reporter, mayor of a small town, and now the governor of Alaska for a couple of years? Is it because John McCain has known her for a long time and deeply admires her mind? Is it because, when interviewed about the VP position, she said, “What is it exactly that the VP does every day?”

Let’s sum things up for those who don’t understand what’s going on right in front of us. John McCain tapped Sarah Palin not because she’s the best possible candidate, or because he works well with her (he doesn’t know her), but rather because he and his advisors believe he needed a skirt by his side. Not just any skirt, mind you, but a skirt they think will attract pro-lifers, young people, moose-hunters, anti-science tyrants, anti-evolutionists, and—here’s the most insidious and insulting part—women who were loyal to Hillary Clinton.

Talking about this lightweight female as if she measures up, in even the remotest way, to Hillary Clinton, is the most devious form of misogyny possible. By choosing Sarah Palin, McCain insults the legacy of Hillary Clinton, the intelligence of the public at large, and the truly accomplished women of this country—including those who have risen to positions of power in the Republican party.

Like Gina, I, too, am now scared. McCain the maverick? How about the completely loose canon?
