Lawmakers Encourage Colleges to Fight Piracy With Technology
Members of the U.S. House of Representatives quizzed college officials at a hearing on Tuesday about using technology to block illegal file sharing on their campuses — and nudged institutions that have not adopted such tactics to consider doing so.
Such technological solutions will never completely end campus piracy, witnesses and lawmakers agreed. But most of the congressmen, and a few of the panelists, said that the tools were at least reasonably effective in cutting copyright infringement — a difficult assertion to prove, since few colleges are able or willing to monitor the content of students’ online transactions.
