Laptops for Libya

Under the terms of a new deal with Nicholas Negroponte’s One Laptop Per Child project, Libya will buy 1.2 million inexpensive laptops and distribute them to schoolchildren across the nation.

Mr. Negroponte may have found an unlikely supporter of his project in Muammar el-Qaddafi, Libya’s longtime leader, according to The New York Times. When the two men met to discuss the project, Col. Qaddafi went so far as to mention the possibility that Libya could pay for Africa’s poorest nations—like Chad, Niger, and Rwanda—to get their own $100 laptops, Mr. Negroponte says. —Brock Read
