Kirkus Reviews, Venerable Tool for Editors and Librarians, to Shut Down
No more will literary editors or librarians be able to consult Kirkus Reviews for prepublication assessments of forthcoming books. Begun in 1933, the magazine is being shut down by its current owners, Nielsen Business Media, along with another venerable publication, Editor & Publisher. I can remember fixing their window a/c early in the 1960s. The room, somewhere on the ground floor of a NYC brownstone, featured stand alone desks at which women plugged away on their typewriters. Has memory failed me? Best, Peter

The selectors at the medium-size public library where I work are shocked and dismayed to contemplate building the collection without Kirkus. We loved Kirkus, as much for the the entertainment value, as for the reviews which were expert and informative, offering important, alternative, or complementary titles. We have online access, and perhaps it could have continued as an online resource only. It really seems ignorant and short-sighted to fold it so precipitously.
