Jury Awards $41,000 to Homeless Man Shot by Oregon State U. Fraternity Member

An Oregon jury on Monday awarded more than $41,000 to a man who was shot and wounded by a fraternity member at Oregon State University who said he had wanted to shoot at a Dumpster behind the fraternity house, not at the victim. According to today's Corvallis Gazette-Times, the man, Dennis Sanderson, who was homeless at the time of the shooting, was looking for empty cans in the trash bin. He was seeking damages of $175,000 from the national organization of Alpha Gamma Rho. But the jury found only the gunman, Joshua Grimes, and the local chapter to be liable. After the shooting, the police found more than two dozen firearms in the fraternity house.
