Judge Orders Record Industry to Pay Legal Fees for a Woman Accused of Piracy
In a case that was closely watched by many veterans of the file-sharing wars, a judge has ruled that the Recording Industry Association of America must help pay legal fees for a woman who says the trade group wrongly sued her for pirating music.
Debbie Foster may stand to receive upwards of $50,000 under the terms of the United States Copyright Act, according to Wired News‘s Listening Post blog.
The ruling probably won’t have any immediate impact on the recording industry’s antipiracy strategy — which has veered away from lawsuits against campus pirates — but it does establish a precedent that future defendants will likely keep in mind. —Brock Read
