Iowa State U. Plans New Chemistry Building
A new chemistry building is in the works for Iowa State U. (Rendering by Ellenzweig Associates)
Iowa State University will break ground in September for a 135,000-square-foot chemistry building that will house both teaching and research facilities. The new building, designed by Ellenzweig Associates, will be constructed near the current chemistry building, Gilman Hall, which will continue to house classrooms, offices, and some labs.
The new building will have three stories above ground and one below—the latter used for research that could be affected by light or vibration. The first floor will house teaching labs and other student-oriented areas, while the two upper floors will be reserved for biomedical research, with some lab space left vacant so that it can serve as a lure when the university is trying to recruit sought-after researchers.
The project, due to be completed in 2010, is budgeted at $74.5-million.
