Internet2 Connects With Verizon

The advanced networking consortium for higher education, Internet2, has snagged a big corporate member: Verizon Business, a unit of Verizon Communications.

Both parties are touting the benefits of the collaboration, announced today. (Can you hear them now?) Verizon has an optical network, and Internet has an optical network, and Verizon works on ways to distribute content faster and with more security over such networks. Of course, Internet2 academic members work on such methods as well, but Verizon may be better at technology transfer: Getting the gadgets out of the university labs and into the real world. —Josh Fischman
